Hicham (born Beirut, 1967) is a co-owner of Phoenix Ancient Art, founded by his father, Sleiman Aboutaam in 1968.

Early life

Sleiman quizzed his children (Hicham and his brother and fellow co-owner, Ali Aboutaam) on Greco-Roman rulers, using catalogs to assess the value of ancient coins based on their style, quality and condition. 10 years after attending the University of Michigan Hicham joined his brother and took over the family business in the wake of their parents' tragic death on Swissair Flight 111.[1]

In 2015, Hicham and his brother Ali were named at the top of the Blouin Art+Auction|Blouin Art + Auction guide to America's most influential figures in art and design.[2]

Antiquities Coalition

Hicham recognized the increasing controversy surrounding the antiquities trade. He was concerned about the changing international climate regarding provenance and its potential legal blow-back on the family business.[3]

He responded by financing a conference with the Milken Institute in 2007, encouraging private gallerists to collaborate with the public sector around rapidly changing laws. In the wake of allegations and controversies at his business, he offered a full refund policy to any collector who determined a work had a false provenance. The event was attended by British Prime Minister Tony Blair, civil rights activist Jesse Jackson and President Paul Kagame of Rwanda among other notable figures.
