Hermann Swart (born 16 March 1980) is a South African social psychologist[1] who specializes in the study of intergroup relations in post-conflict settings.

Biography

Hermann is the eldest of five brothers. He matriculated from Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch, South Africa in 1997. He graduated from Stellenbosch University (SU) in a B.Sc degree in 2000, an Hons degree in B.Sc (Psychology) cum laude in 2001, and a M.Sc degree (Counselling psychology) cum laude in 2005. He pursued a D.Phil (Experimental psychology) from the University of Oxford, England[2], which he obtained in 2008. He was appointed as a social psychology lecturer for both undergraduate and postgraduate level at SU Department of Psychology in 2011. He met his wife at the Maties Ballroom and Latin American Dance Society where they were both members. They tied the knot in 2009 and welcomed their daughter, Emma, into the world in 2014.

Work

Hermann has published widely in the field of experimental social psychology. His research interests include diversity in different social contexts, intergroup contact (cross-group friendships), intergroup emotions, prejudice, and stereotypes in post-conflict societies.[3] He has co-authored 16 peer-reviewed articles, 7 book chapters [3], and 24 conference presentations. He specializes in advanced quantitative research methodology (longitudinal survey research and experimental methods) and advanced statistical analyses (longitudinal, multi-level, and multi-group structural equation modelling). Hermann has published in the American psychologist, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, the British Journal of Social Psychology, Group Processes and Intergroup Relations, and the Journal of Social issues.[3]

Awards

  • 1986: At the age of 6 years old he earned Western Province colors in Greco-Roman wrestling and went on to win a bronze medal at the South African Coastal Championships in 1987.
  • 1994: At the age of 14 Hermann won the Western Cape Afrikaans Eisteddfod for Junior High School pupils.
  • Between 2003 and 2007: He won numerous titles as a member of the SU (Maties) Ballroom and Latin American Dance Society at the South African Intervarsity Ballroom and Latin American Dance Competition (Ballroom and Latin American Intermediate Class; Mambo Open Class), and frequently placed in the Top 3 in the Viennese Waltz Open Class, Mambo Open Class, Boogie Open Class).
  • 2004: He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship (Paul Roos Gymnasium & Worcester College) to undertake my doctoral studies at the University of Oxford, England. He completed his degree under the supervision of Miles Hewstone, a pre-eminent social psychologist specializing in the study of intergroup relations.
  • 2010, 2013, 2022: He won first-year teaching awards from SU, an awarded chosen by the top performing first-year students for those lecturers who they felt had the biggest impact on their success in their first year of university.
  • 2015: He is a co-recipient of the Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations Prize from the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues for the best paper on intergroup relations.
