Hippolyte Etienne Hélie, known as Henri Hélis, was born on 11 December 1872 in Romorantin (Loir-et-Cher) and died on 15 January 1945 in Paris, was a French painter, pastellist and draftsman.

Biography

Student of the painter and ceramist Ovide Scribe in Romorantin, he participated in the drawing section at the 4th edition of l’exposition internationale de blanc et noir in 1890, where he presented Etude dans le parc de Beauvais[1]. In January 1891, he was appointed secretary of the Société des artistes indépendants, an organization founded in 1884 in order to escape the strictness of the Salon and thus allow artists to exhibit without validation by a selection jury.

From 1892, he moved to Paris rue Vavin and participated in evening classes at the "Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs" in drawing after a cast classes and hand composition of ornaments, as well as attending the study sessions organized by the national museums, for which he is presented by his master, Auguste Allongé, a painter specializing in charcoal drawing. During his first exhibition at the "Salon des artistes français", in 1894, he presented a pastel: "Coin de Mare". From 1897, he joined the" Société des artistes indépendants" and exhibited regularly at their annual salon. The following year, he won the silver medal at the international exhibition in Alençon.

From the year 1899 he abandoned his pastels to present oil paintings, and in particular "Une Matinée a Cerny, "unveiled during the 15th exhibition of the "Société des Artistes Indépendants".

In 1903, alongside Jourdain, Cézanne and Guimard, he founded the "Société du Salon d'Automne ", for which he presented at the first exhibition "Canal à Bruges". The following year he joined the "Société du Salon d'Hiver" and exhibited regularly within the framework of this Salon but also at the "Salon des Indépendants" and the "Salon d'Automne."

In 1908 his painting "Brumes sur le Cher "was acquired for 200 francs by the Ministry of Public Instruction and Fine Arts following its exhibition at the 24th edition of the "Salon des Indépendants", where it was presented alongside "Routes à Fontaine-en-Sologne", "Cerisiers Fleuris", "Romorantin", "Neige au Bois de Boulogne", "Lande". The following year he was made an officer of the Academy.
