Hemen Khaledi (Persian: هیمن خالدی, Kurdish: ھێمن خالدی) is an Iranian Kurdish documentary film director and producer. He is best known for his debut feature documentary Singing Wings (2025), which won the Mecenat Award for Best Asian Documentary at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).[1][2]
Early life and education
Khaledi began his filmmaking education at the Iranian Youth Cinema Society while studying physical geography at university.[3] With a background in theater acting, he later pursued a master's degree in cinema.[3]
Career
He started his professional career as a photographer and assistant to directors, cinematographers, and sound recordists.[3] His short film Balora was screened at several international film festivals, including the MEDIAWAVE International Film Festival and the Early Bird International Student Film Festival, winning awards at the Apricot Tree and Slemani International Film Festivals.[3]
His first feature-length documentary, Singing Wings, is an international co-production between Iran, Georgia, and Belgium.[2][1] The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Busan International Film Festival, where it won the top documentary award.[1] It was also an official selection at the Zurich Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival.[3]
In the film, Khaledi, who is a native of the Kurdistan Province, chose to focus on the "pure spirit and simple way of life" of the Kurdish people rather than their hardships.[1]
