Heinz Ludwig Scharnowski (June 3, 1910 - September 21, 1952) was a German rocket scientist active during and after World War II. Born in Elbing, Germany, he studied and received his bachelors of science from the State Technical Academy, Nurnberg in 1934 and his dipl.ing (the German equivalent to a master's degree in engineering) in electro-techniques and machinery from the Berlin Institute of Technology in 1940. After his studies, he worked in Peenemuende, Germany, where he worked as a specialist in measurement techniques to help construct some of the first V-2 rockets. After the end of World War II, Scharnowski immigrated to the United States under Operation Paperclip, where he worked alongside Wernher von Braun as a rocket scientist. He worked in the Guided Missile Development Division/Army Ballistic Missile Agency until he passed away on September 21, 1952 in Huntsville, Alabama.
