The process of using skilled dialogue, clinical treatments, and other tactics to actively and safely involve clients or patients in the process of changing their health behaviours is referred to as health coaching. The clients and patients of health coaches may have chronic illnesses, or they may be at a moderate to high risk for developing chronic diseases. Health coaches are qualified or accredited to properly advise these clients and patients.

Health coaching for doctors and practitioners is grounded on evidence-based therapeutic treatments such as goal setting, active listening, aggregation and trending of health outcome measures, motivational interviewing to encourage behaviour change, and the transtheoretical model of change.

"the degree to which one feels good and excited about life," is how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describe wellbeing. A technique known as wellness coaching is one that helps clients improve their behaviour in a way that is both healthy and sustainable. This is accomplished by encouraging clients to cultivate their own inner knowledge, determine what their values are, and turn their aspirations into actions. The fields of positive psychology and appreciative inquiry provide the theoretical foundation for wellness coaching, while motivational interviewing and goal-setting provide the practical skillset.

Dietary recommendations are not within the scope of practise for health coaches. Dietitians in the United States are the only nutrition experts who are legally required to be licenced, and they must adhere to a strict code of ethics in order to guarantee that their work is of the best possible quality. The Bachelor of Scientific degree in Dietetics or a comparable science degree with a postgraduate certificate or higher degree in Dietetics is the bare minimum education level required for this position.

It is against the law in thirteen states in the United States to provide personalised nutrition advice unless the practitioner is licenced or exempt. In all seriousness, only Registered Dietitians are qualified to apply for licences. On the other hand, the laws of each nation in the globe are uniquely different from one another.
