Health, a condition of total physical, mental, and social well-being, rather than only the absence of sickness and disability, is defined as such by the World Health Organization. There have been many distinct definitions used for various reasons throughout history. Health may be improved by promoting healthy behaviours such as regular physical activity and getting enough sleep, as well as minimising or avoiding unhealthful activities or circumstances such as smoking or being under a great deal of pressure. Some aspects of health are determined by individual choices, such as whether or not to engage in a high-risk behaviour, while others are determined by structural factors, such as whether or not a society is organised in a way that makes it easier or harder for people to access necessary healthcare resources. Other variables, such as hereditary problems, are beyond the control of individuals and groups alike.
