Hayley Dawn Young Browne (born 24th September 1984) is a Councillor for Napier City Council [1]. But before getting into politics she served in the New Zealand Navy where she indured constant sexual harassment, eventually leading up to a rape[2]. She left the navy and while attempting to get on with her life and move forward, the Navy created a recruitment poster to recruit more women into the navy, but they used her face in the marketing.
Many years of legal battles followed with the New Zealand government claiming they did not have a duty of care, and the UK government claiming sovereign immunity. Hayley finally got the apology she had always been waiting for in 2019[3] after a 5 year fight for justice before giving birth to her daughter Matilda Rose Browne[4] on the 23rd of May 2019 and becoming a councillor for Napier, New Zealand.
