Hayato Sumino (Japanese: 角野隼斗 born July 14, 1995[2]), also known as Cateen (Japanese: かてぃん), is a Japanese musician (a pianist / a YouTuber). He is qualified to be one of the competitors of The 18th Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition Preliminary Stage.[2]
Biography
He was born in 1995 in Yachiyo City, Chiba prefecture, Japan.
He began learning piano at the age of three with his mother, who was a piano-teacher at home[3].
He also started learning piano under Katsuko Kaneko when he was six years old[3].
In 2014 he entered University of Tokyo, majoring mathematics, statistics and information science[4].
In 2018 he entered the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, engaging in research of information processing, especially automatic music transcription and automatic music timbre-based arrangement[5].
In 2018-2019 he was sent to France for six months to reserch more about his study field at IRCAM (the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music)[6].
While in France he learned piano under Claire Désert and Jean-Marc Luisada[6].
In March 2020 he graduated from the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Information Science and Technology with receiving Grand Prize of the President of the University of Tokyo[7].
Still now He learns piano under Katsuko Kaneko, Tomoaki Yoshida, Jean-Marc Luisada and jazz theory under Nana Yoshida[8].
Awards
Main awards he received were:
- Gold Prize at the category of Elementary School 1st and 2nd in the 4th Chopin International Piano Competition in ASIA in 2003[9]
- Gold Prize at the Jr.G class in the 29th PTNA Piano Competition, Japan in 2005[10]
- Gold Prize at the category of Junior Highschool in the 12th Chopin International Piano Competition in ASIA in 2011[11]
- Gold Prize at the category of College General in the 18th Chopin International Piano Competition in ASIA in 2017[12]
- Grand Prix in the 42th PTNA Piano Competition, Japan in 2018, as well as Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award and Steinway Award[13] [14]
- 3rd Award (no second award) in the International Piano Competition of Lyon in 2019[15]
Career
He started his career as a pianist after he received Grand Prix of PTNA in 2018[5].
In 2019 he performed over 30 concerts including nine salon concerts in Paris[6], recitals in Wien[16] and Poland[17].
In 2020 even though a lot of his concerts have been cancelled due to COVID-19, he has performed many live streaming concerts including "NET PIANO CO. LAB(ねぴらぼ)", in which he played with three other YouTube pianists[18].
