Harold Andrew Partridge (born 17 August, 1987), also known by the online name Happy Harry[1], is an English animator, artist, composer, voice actor, filmmaker, and Internet personality. He is best known for his animations posted to Newgrounds and YouTube, including Saturday Morning Watchmen and videos parodying The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Early life
Partridge was born on 17 August, 1987 to Andy Partridge and Marianne Wyborn. He grew up in Swindon, England.[2] His father is known for being a founding member, vocalist, and guitar player for English new wave band XTC.[3][4] In 1994, Partridge's parents divorced.[5] The same year, Partridge's father began dating singer Erica Wexler.[6]
From an early age, Partridge was interested in animation, particularly Saturday-morning cartoons like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.[3] Partridge was introduced to the website Newgrounds at 12 or 13 years old while attending school. He and classmates would use school computers to play Flash games when the teacher wasn't looking.[7] Partridge has cited Richard Williams, Brad Bird, Genndy Tartakovsky, and Bruce Timm among the major influences on his work.[3]
He attended the Surrey Institute of Art & Design, University College|Surry Institute of Art and Design, now part of University for the Creative Arts.[8]
Career
Partridge produced a thirty-second long animation titled The Human Snot[9] and began publishing videos to Newgrounds in 2004.[10] In September 2005, his cartoon Irving the Socially Awkward Bee was featured on the front page of Newgrounds and received a daily feature the next day.[11] He created a YouTube channel in June 2006 and began uploading his content to both sites.[12]
In March 2009, Partridge released Saturday Morning Watchmen, a parody of the influential comic series Watchmen in the style of a 1980s action cartoon intro.[13] The short includes voice actors Hans van Harken and Joshua Tomar as Ozymandias and Bubastis, respectively.[14] The rest of the characters, as well as vocals for the theme song, were performed by Partridge. The animation received a Weekly User's Choice Award and a Daily Feature Award on Newgrounds[1] and was reported on by IndieWire and AV Club.[15][16] Dave Gibbons, artist and co-creator of Watchmen, acknowledged the parody in an interview, saying "I loved it. The thing is, obviously they’re having fun with it but the way it was done, you know that the person really cared about what they were doing…really knew Watchmen in detail."[17] As of September 2022, the YouTube upload of the video has garnered over 7.7 million views.[18]
After the viral attention of Saturday Morning Watchmen, Partridge was approached by BBC to animate and produce content for BBC Comedy.[19] Through this partnership, Partridge created two animated shorts, Johnny Depp in Burtonland, a parody of the Tim Burton's 2010 adaptation of Alice in Wonderland,[19] and I Can't Believe It's Not The Beatles: Rock Band, a parody of The Beatles: Rock Band.[20] He also animated a video skit for comedy duo Mitchell and Webb titled "Attic Junk", released in May 2010.[21] Partridge also created a series of animation tutorials in 2010 for YouTube channel HuHa! 2, called Happy Harry's HuHa! 2 How-To's, which taught how to make cartoons using Adobe Flash as well as animation fundamentals.[19][22]
In February 2011, after the announcement of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Partridge released a video simply titled Skyrim.[23] The video features a caricature of Partridge singing about his excitement for the new Elder Scrolls game to the tune of the game's main theme.[24] The video was very popular, being featured on the website of video game magazine Game Informer.[25] As on September 2022, it sits at over 24 million views[24] and is the most viewed video on Partridge's YouTube channel.[12] In November, Partridge followed up the success of the video with another musical parody animation, Song of Skyrim.[25] Other videos based on the game series include The Elder Scrolls Adventures with the Dovahkids and Back to Tamriel, the latter coinciding with the release of The Elder Scrolls Online in 2014.
In March 2011, Partridge created a video satirizing the animation created platform GoAnimate, later rebranded as Vyond.[26] The video received some criticism for its apparent mockery of and distain for the platform, including an article written for Cartoon Brew by animation journalist Amid Amidi.[27] Partridge stated he "was really indifferent to the software" and simply had an idea he "thought would be funny."[28]
From 2011 to 2013, Partridge was an animator and artist on a series called BearShark, a slapstick comedy inspired by Wile E. Coyote and The Road Runner.[29] Produced by CollegeHumor, the series was made as part of a partnership with Japanese video game company Nintendo to create exclusive content for their new Nintendo 3DS system.[30]
In 2014, Partridge was approached by his YouTube network at the time to create a short film under the theme of "Geek Week". With this prompt he created the video With Animation You Can, a love letter to animation, however the project missed the deadline and Partridge "didn't receive a penny from the venture".[28] Also that year, Partridge was commissioned to create an animated title sequence for the comedy audio commentary website RiffTrax, set to a song created by Jonathon Coulton.[28][31]
In recent years, Partridge has been working as a freelance animator while working on his own projects. He has been able to fund original series like Starbarians and Dr. Bees using fan donations on the crowdfunding website Patreon.[32] He was also an animator for the pilot episode of Hazbin Hotel, released in October 2019.[33] In 2022, Partridge voiced multiple characters in the Adult Swim comedy series Smiling Friends, co-created by fellow Newgrounds animator Zach Hadel. He was also lead animator for the character "Mip" in the Smiling Friends episode, "The Enchanted Forest".
Personal life
Partridge is married to artist Joyce Oder, who has also been a frequent collaborator on his films and projects.[34] The two first met after Partridge was part of a Newgrounds panel at San Diego Comic-Con in 2009.[35]
