Hans Ramzan (born 12 August 1994, United Kingdom) is a British industrial designer and director of the company "CATCH by Hans". In 2019, Ramzan won London Design Museum’s Designs of the Year award for product design.[1] Ramzan has exhibited his work at events such as; the London Design Festival, and London Design Fair [2] – and has been recognised for awards, including The Design Museum's Design of the Year (CATCH: HIV detector) [3], NASA Tech Briefs (CATCH: HIV detector) [4], World Design Impact Prize (The Phone Cell: Mobile lockbox). [5]

Early life and education

Ramzan was born in Solihull and attended Tudor Grange Senior School. He then continued his studies at The Sixth Form College, Solihull where he studied the creative arts. He furthered his education to study a Bachelor's degree in Product Design at The Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD - now known as the faculty of Art, Design and Media - ADM) within Birmingham City University. [6] Ramzan graduated in 2015.

Whilst freelancing after university, Ramzan moved from his home in Bournville, Birmingham, to London in 2016 to develop his design career further.

Career

In 2014, Ramzan began to design The Phone Cell.[7] In mid 2015, this was exhibited at the Business Design Centre, London.

Ramzan co-founded RamzanVong, (later RV Studios). In 2016, RamzanVong created the Pokeball Charger. [8] This idea stemmed from the popularity rise of Pokemon shortly after the release of the Pokemon Go mobile game.

Shortly after the release of the Pokeball Charger, RamzanVong collaborated on The London Tube Collection. This was a furniture collection inspired by the London Underground - initially intended to be gifted to the Transport Design Museum, London.[9] Not long after the collection had been created, RamzanVong exhibited the London Tube Collection at London Design Festival and London Design Fair in the Old Truman Brewery. [2]

Ramzan designed and developed CATCH - an HIV detector.[10] CATCH had been nominated for numerous awards including; Design of the Year [3] , NASA Tech Briefs [4] , and the INDEX award [11]. In an interview, Ramzan claims CATCH aims to "do all the thinking for the user". [12] [13]

In 2019, Ramzan received the award for Design of the Year from The Design Museum in London.[14]
