Hans Bøgh-Sørensen is a Danish businessman who is behind companies such as Orifarm, Habicoand Hans’ Wine Club[1] [2] [3] [4]. Additionally, he holds several board positions, including the position as board member of the Chief Executives Organization in Washington, USA[5]. Today, Hans Bøgh-Sørensen is known as the owner and founder of the pharmaceutical trading company Orifarm, which he co-founded with his wife, Birgitte Bøgh-Sørensen [6].

Early Life & Education

Hans Bøgh-Sørensen grew up in in Denmark as the son of Elin and Asbjørn Bøgh-Sørensen. His father owned and operated the juice factory Rimi A/S, which was founded by Hans Bøgh-Sørensen’s grandfather, Carl Bøgh-Sørensen [6].

After primary and lower secondary school, Hans Bøgh-Sørensen attended high school at Odense Katedralskole, where he graduated as a mathematical-physical student in 1975.

After a year of internships in companies in German-speaking countries, Hans Bøgh-Sørensen went to Switzerland where he studied business administration at the University of St.Gallen. Hans Bøgh-Sørensen graduated from the university in 1980 and earned the title lic.oec. HSG.[6]

Hans Bøgh-Sørensen is also an alumnus of Harvard University’s President Leadership Program.

In 1982, Hans Bøgh-Sørensen returned to Denmark to join the family’s juice company as Deputy Chief Executive [7]. Back in Denmark, he met his wife Birgitte Bøgh-Sørensen who at that time worked as Product Development Manager at Danish Distillers (De Danske Spritfabrikker) [8]. The couple got married in 1993 and live in Odense/Copenhagen, Denmark.Together they have three children named Christian, Anne-Charlotte, and Andreas [8].

Hans Bøgh-Sørensen has great personal interest in hunting, skiing, and cars. He is a dedicated Ferrari enthusiast and owns several track sports cars, including a Ferrari 599 XX Evo [9]. His interest in wine, primarily French wines from the Bordeaux region, led him to start importing wine himself, and in 2020 he established the wine shop Hans’ Wine Club [2]. Finally, Hans Bøgh-Sørensen is interested in art and has been a board member of Art Museum Brandts in Odense, Denmark (2010-2017) [10].

Career

Already when Hans Bøgh-Sørensen was a young man, he engaged in his family’s juice company, Rimi A/S, and at the age of sixteen, he took over 30 percent of the shares in the company [11].

In 1982, he returned from a job at Maersk Data to join the family’s juice company as an assistant director. He held this position until 1987 when he became the owner and Chief Executive Director [7].

A few years later, Hans Bøgh-Sørensen chose to sell his shares in the family business in connection with the merger of Rimi A/S (at the time called Ripella A/S) and Rynkeby A/S. The company has since become Rynkeby Foods [12].

After selling his shares, Birgitte and Hans Bøgh-Sørensen established the pharmaceutical company Orifarm in the fall of 1994 [12]. During Hans Bøgh-Sørensen’s leadership, the company has grown significantly. In 2019, he stepped down as CEO of Orifarm after more than 25 years at the helm. Hans Bøgh-Sørensen continued as Chairman of the board and is still active in the company. Today, Orifarm is an international company with approximately 2,300 employees and a turnover of €1.5 billion in 2022 [13] [14].

In 2016, Hans Bøgh-Sørensen initiated a generational change, which means that Birgitte and Hans Bøgh-Sørensen’s three children now hold 90 percent of the ownership in the family holding company, Habico Holding A/S [15]. Each of the three children owns 30 percent of the share capital, while Hans Bøgh-Sørensen owns the remaining 10 percent. Hans Bøgh-Sørensen holds the majority of the votes [15].

Throughout his career, Hans Bøgh-Sørensen has been involved in a wide range of various positions of trust. He has held positions such as Chairman of the Odense Municipality Business Council (2003-2007) [16] and the European Association of Euro-Pharmaceutical Companies (EAEPC) (1997-2017) which he is also co-founder of [6] [16]. In 2000, Hans Bøgh-Sørensen received the Entrepreneur of the Year Award, Denmark, and in 2008, The Tietgen Award [17] [18].
