Hans-Peter Wipplinger ( 12 January 1968 in Schärding) is an Austrian exhibition creator, author and museum director.

Career

Hans-Peter Wipplinger studied art history, theater and media studies, as well as communication science at University of Vienna|Vienna University. He graduated with a diploma thesis on the artist Christian Boltanski entitled “Das Phänomen der Konstruktion von Geschichte. Erinnern und Vergessen – Wissenschaftlicher Geschichtsdiskurs versus künstlerische Annäherung zur Darstellung von Geschichte. Exemplifiziert am Beispiel der künstlerischen Arbeit des Spurensicherers und Gedächtniskünstlers Christian Boltanski”..[1] Hans-Peter Wipplinger has worked, among other institutions, at the OK. Centrum für Gegenwartskunst in Linz (1992–1994), the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York (2000–2001) as well as for the Viennale|Viennale – Vienna International Film Festival (2001–2003). In 1998 he founded the art and communications agency “art:phalanx – Kunst- und Kommunikationsbüro” (together with Heide Linzer) aimed at conceptualizing, financing, realizing and mediating art and cultural projects in Austria, heading the company as managing partner until the end of 2008. From 2003 to 2007 he acted as Director of the Museum Moderner Kunst in Passau, curating, among others, monographic exhibitions on Anna Jermolaewa (2004), Franz West (2004), Yoko Ono (2005), Jürgen Klauke (2006), Zoran Mušič (2007) and Dan Perjovschi (2007). From 2009 to 2015 he was the Director of the Kunsthalle Krems[2], the Factory, the Kunstraum Stein as well as of the AIR – artist-in-residence program in the Lower Austrian city of Krems an der Donau. At the beginning of his directorship, he was tasked with advancing the exhibition program of the Kunstmeile Krems, with re-positioning individual associated exhibition institutions, with devising new strategies in the areas of corporate identity, corporate design and press and public relations, and with establishing stronger networks with international art institutions. At the Kunsthalle Krems he curated acclaimed retrospective exhibitions on Paula Modersohn-Becker (2010) and Francis Picabia (2012), solo exhibitions on Joseph Beuys (2008), Daniel Spoerri (2011) and Gelatin and Sarah Lucas (2011), as well as themed exhibitions, including “Sehnsucht nach dem Abbild. Das Porträt im Wandel der Zeit” (2009), “Nouveau Réalisme” (2011) and “Große Gefühle. Von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart” (2013). Together with Tomas Zierhofer-Kin, the artistic director of the Donaufestival Krems, he developed new presentation formats at the point of intersection between performance, sound art and installation, sounding out pop-cultural and performative limits in a dialogue with visual arts. In the context of these cooperations, he hosted artists including Douglas Gordon (2013), Tino Sehgal (2013), John Bock (2012), Jonathan Meese (2011), Ole Aselmann (2011), Franz Graf & Franz Pomassl, Magnus Arnason (2010) at the Kunsthalle Krems. Since June 2015 he has held the position of Artistic Director of the Leopold Museum[3][4], curating, among others, retrospectives on Wilhelm Lehmbruck (2016), Ferdinand Hodler (2017), Zoran Mušič (2018) and Richard Gerstl (2019), the dialogue exhibition "Carl Spitzweg — Erwin Wurm. Hilarious! Hilarious?" (2017) as well as the new permanent presentation of the museum’s collection "Vienna 1900. Birth of Modernism" (2019). In October 2020 he was appointed Director of the Leopold Museum for a further five years.[5] He has served and continues to serve as a member of various juries and advisory committees, among others for the Austrian Federal Ministry of Arts and Culture, Vienna; for juries of the States of Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg and Tyrol; as a member of the Cultural Senate of Lower Austria; as a jury member of the T-Mobile Art Award, the Boston Consulting Group|Boston Consulting & Belvedere Art Award, the Prague Art Award, the Strabag Art Award and that of the Austrian Post|Austrian Post AG. As an author and editor he has written numerous scientific essays on modern and contemporary art.

Awards

In 2019 Hans-Peter Wipplinger received the viennaARTaward[13], one of the most prestigious art prizes in Austria, and in 2020 was honored with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his outstanding services to German-Austrian cultural relations[14]
