Research projects

Democracy Matrix

DFG research project headed by Hans-Joachim Lauth: The Democracy Matrix is an instrument for measuring democratic quality. Based on data from the Varieties of Democracy project (V-Dem), the Democracy Matrix provides information for about 200 states in the period between 1900 and 2017. The democratic quality of political systems is captured by three dimensions, five institutions and 15 matrix fields as well as three measurement levels. Thus, a disaggregated and differentiated measurement system is realized to trace transformation processes and identify quality and democracy profiles.[3]

LoSAM

DFG project "Local Self-Regulations in the Context of Weak Statehood in Antiquity and Modernity"[4]: The interdisciplinary DFG research group deals with variants of local self-regulations in the context of weak statehood between antiquity and modernity within the framework of seven subprojects.

LoSAM focused on different local groups and their relations to different levels of state rule as well as to other local groups. How did the scope and spatial contingency of forms of self-governance, their legitimacy, and the collective identity of groups evolve over time?

Fiscal Citizenship

On March 1, 2021, a three-year interdisciplinary research project with a budget of €1.5 million started as part of the Open Research Area program, jointly funded by the DFG, the Canadian SSHRC and the British ESRC. Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim Lauth is involved with a subproject.

The project entitled "Fiscal Citizenship in Migrant Societies: An International Cross-Country Comparison"[5] aims to improve our understanding of how citizens' attitudes towards the state influence their willingness to pay taxes. The interdisciplinary project uses a variety of research methods and will be conducted in parallel in the three participating countries. The project is led by Professor Lynne Oats, University of Exeter, together with Professor Dr. Dirk Kiesewetter from the University of Würzburg and Dr. Kim-Lee Tuxhorn from the University of Calgary.

Statehood Index "StIx."

The new statehood index is the focus of the DFG research project "The Statehood Index "StIx": Measuring System and Analysis of Statehood"[6] at the Chair of Comparative Politics and Systems at the University of Würzburg, which was approved for the period 10/2021 to 05/2024.

The Statehood Index StIx is an instrument for measuring statehood based on data from the Varieties of Democracy Project (V-Dem). StIx provides measurement results for approximately 170 states over the period between 1900 and 2022. Once the research is completed, the dataset will be freely available to all interested parties on the Statehood Index (StIx) homepage.
