Hanna-Maaria Tuomela is a Finnish singer, songwriter, pianist, and music educator. Her compositions have a fresh and unique soundscape; mixing elements of classical music, wistful acoustic ballads, and nordic alternative pop.[1]

She is best known for being second in the X Factor Finland in 2018, performing nearly exclusively her own songs. As of spring 2024 she is featured as a contestant on the Austrian “Die Grosse Chance”, broadcast by ORF1.[2]

Early life and education

Tuomela was born and raised in Helsinki, Finland. Hanna-Maaria spent her childhood surrounded by music having been born into a musical family. She received extensive classical piano and music theory education. During her studies in the music Sibelius High School she got invited by the Kuala Lumpur ISME (International Society for Music Education) Festival to represent young women student composers from Finland.[3]

In 2014, she completed her master’s degree in music from the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts of Helsinki with an emphasis in voice, classical piano, and music education. She further studied at the Metropolia University of Applied sciences and obtained a second Bachelor’s degree in 2020 in pop/jazz voice pedagogy.

Career

Tuomela maintains a versatile career in music. Besides working on her own music, she has also worked as a composer, arranger, pianist, classical and pop/jazz singer, entertainer, and music educator.

In December 2023, Tuomela released her debut album Maaria, with original Finnish pop songs with co-writer, producer and guitarist Lasse Hukka. Album songs have appeared on multiple Spotify editorial lists and placed 16th on the Spotify’s Finnish Viral list in addition to being consistently played on Finnish radio. Besides working on her pop music in Finnish, she releases her original alt-pop songs in English under her full first name, Hanna-Maaria.[4]

In 2018, Tuomela was a contestant on X Factor Finland. She finished as the first runner-up, competing nearly exclusively with original compositions.

In 2015 Hanna-Maaria provided the lead vocals for hit single “Sä huudat” by Finland famous rap artist Cheek.[5] The song was #1 on Finnish radio and streaming charts for 2 weeks. Cheek and Tuomela performed together in stadiums and on TV for thousands of fans. As a pop singer, Tuomela has not only performed solo at several festivals and with Finland’s professional state orchestras, but sung with some of the biggest Finnish stars including Saara Aalto, Diandra, and Emma Salokoski. She also toured with pop artist Mariska,[6] providing not only backing vocals and piano but DJing with her on stage.[7]

As a classical singer, Tuomela was a soprano for the Grammy award-winning Helsinki Chamber Choir during 2009-2018. The choir worked with reputable organizations such as the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Finnish National Opera. Tuomela has also sung in the famous Berlin Philharmonie.[8]

Tuomela has authored artistic compositions for Sibelius High School Chamber Choir, Ritva Oksanen, Penni, and Lasse Hukka. She has also composed music for commercial use.[9]

From 2013-2022, Hanna-Maaria worked as a music teacher at the The Espoo Finnish Adult Education Centre and Sibelius High School, teaching rhythmic voice and music, choral singing, and vocal ensembles.[10]
