Gustaf Svante Henning Arrhenius, born June 28, 1966, is a Swedish philosopher. He is a professor of practical philosophy at Stockholm University, holding a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. in practical philosophy from Uppsala University[1]. He is an honorary professor at Aarhus University[2], a member of the Economics and Philosophy Initiative at the Paris School of Economics[3], and a fellow of the Academia Europaea[4]. He also serves on the board of the Swedish Agency for Health and Care Services Analysis[5] and is a member of the advisory board for the International Panel on Social Progress (IPSP)[6]. Arrhenius has previously led the Franco-Swedish research program in philosophy and economics at SCAS in Uppsala and the Collège d'études mondiales in Paris. He has held several previous board positions, including for the Equality Foundation from 2015 to 2021 and the magazine Forskning & Framsteg from 2015 to 2017.

Arrhenius is known for his research in moral philosophy and political philosophy, with a particular focus on issues related to future generations and democracy. His research on the rights of future generations and population ethics has gained attention[7], especially through the impossibility theorems he has proven in the latter field[8]. The discussion of population ethics gained momentum in the 1980s with Derek Parfit's book "Reasons and Persons," in which he presented his famous thought experiment known as the repugnant conclusion. Arrhenius extends this discussion and demonstrates that even if one can avoid Kenneth Arrow's impossibility theorem by allowing for much richer information about individuals' well-being, new impossibility theorems with very weak conditions arise when comparing populations of varying sizes. His research has also touched on topics such as the democratic boundary problem, value structures, measures of equality, and fair distribution of power.

Since November 2014, Arrhenius has been the CEO of the Institute for Futures Studies in Stockholm, an independent research foundation that conducts interdisciplinary research on important future issues. There, he leads the activities based on his research program ”Humanity’s Path Forward – Democracy, Technology, Society, and Future Generations”[9].

Arrhenius frequently participates in public debates and argues that political and economic discussions would benefit from a greater inclusion of questions from moral philosophy[10]. He addresses ethical issues related to climate change[11], future generations[12][13], democracy[14], and healthcare[15][16], among others.
