Subhendu Guha (born in Dhaka formerly known as Dacca, Undivided India,1942) is an Indian Scientist in the field of Photovoltaics . He pioneered the development of Amorphous silicon solar cells, that led to the invention of flexible Solar shingle.[1][2][3]

Subhendu's invention of Solar shingle is currently at the collection of National Museum of American History.[4][5][6]

Early life

Dr Guha studied in Scottish Church Collegiate School and Presidency College, Kolkata and got his Ph.D. from University of Calcutta. He did post-doctoral research work at University of Sheffield as a Senior Research Fellow.

Careers

Dr Guha developed a new process for making Amorphous silicon in 1980 after he joined Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai in 1968.[7]

Guha was the Chairman of United Solar a wholly owned subsidiary of Energy Conversion Devices (ECD).[8][9]

In 1991, He led a team of scientists that made innovations to achieve the world's highest efficiency solar cells and modules using Thin-film solar cell silicon.[10][11]

Former President of the United States George W. Bush visited United Solar in 2006, for Guha to develop solar technology, to enable USA becomes less dependent on foreign oil.[12]

Awards and Recognition

Guha is a recipient of Bright Light Award from U.S. Department of Energy, PVSEC 2009 award for outstanding contribution to science and technology of photovoltaic, Best of what's new by Popular Science magazine, Best invention in the Environment Category by Discover magazine, World Technology Award in Energy Category 2005 12, Best of the Best (Sherar Shera) Bengali award 2014 by ABP Ananda for contribution to science.[13][14][15]

Book And Patents

Dr Guha has over 30 US patents 14 and about 250 publications.[16]
