Gregory Scott (born 1957)[1] is an American artist and photographer.
Early Life and Career
Scott grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma as the the eldest of four children.[2] His family moved to Chicago during his high school years. In 1979, he received a Bachelor's degree in visual communications with a minor in photography at the Institute of Design at IIT. Afterwards, he worked as a graphic designer and creative director, eventually owning his own design firm in Chicago.[3] He has four children.
Artistic Career
While working as a graphic designer, Scott began incorporating his photography regularly into his design work, which eventually inspired him to take up other creative endeavors, such as painting.[4] In 2003, he took a photography workshop with Arno Rafael Minkkinen, where he shared the idea of taking close-up paintings he made during live figure studies and filling in the missing parts with his own body, which he would then capture as a photograph.[3] Later, he began embedding videos into paintings to create a new layer of dimension into his work.[2]
In 2005, several of Scott's pieces were featured in a group show at the Catherine Edelman Gallery in what would be his first gallery opening. As he would be out of town that weekend, he built a life-sized painting cutout of himself to stand at the entrance with an embedded screen over the painting's clasped hands to play videos of his real hands doing various activities; the piece was sold on opening night.[4] After the success of his first show, the Catherine Edelman Gallery began representing him full time.[5]
In 2006, he moved to Bloomington, Indiana to study at the University of Indiana.[4] While there, he furthered his expertise in painting, photography, and video design,[2] which he tied together in his grad show gallery. In 2008, he graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in photography.[3]
In December of 2008, the Catherine Edelman Gallery took a couple of Scott's grad show art pieces to Art Miami for Basel week. After that was a success, he began pursuing art as a full-time career. [3] His two solo exhibitions, Outside the Frame and In Still Motion, were displayed at the Edelman as well as several galleries across the United States.
He has an art studio in Cleveland, Ohio.[6]
Style
His work combines photography, painting, and video, which he uses to create depth and perspective in his work. He explores the way people look at and interact with art; the genres and stereotypes of art; and how the art is perceived by its presentation.[2]
