Greetchen Díaz-Muñoz is the Director of the Science Education Program and Community Partnerships at non-profit Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR), a role model for Puerto Rican girls in science, and an advocate for diversity and women in STEM. She was one of the inaugural IF/THEN® Ambassadors,[1][2][3] chosen by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Lyda Hill Philanthropies. She served as the president of the Puerto Rico Society of Microbiologists (PRSM) and the Chair of the Inclusive diversity with equity, access and accountability (IDEAA) Committee of the American Society for Microbiology.

Early life and education

Greetchen Díaz was born in Puerto Rico where she took an early interest in science and exploring the unknown.[4] She grew up in a violent neighborhood of Ponce. Although her family had limited resources, her teachers remarked her curiosity and aptitude.[5] Attending the Residential Center of Educative Opportunities of Mayagüez (CROEM), a magnet high school specializing in math and science, from which she graduated in 1997, would change her life.[5][6] In 2002, she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor's of science in biology from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez. In 2006, she earned a master's of science in microbiology from the same university.[7] She completed her PhD in molecular biology at The Ohio State University, and from there obtained an NIH Kirschstein National Research Award (NRSA) (T32) for a postdoctoral fellowship at the Nebraska Center for Virology at University of Nebraska, Lincoln.[8] Díaz was the first person in her family to obtain a doctorate degree.[9]

Career

A landmark development in Díaz's career in science advocacy was the November 2013 launch of the "Boriqueña" blog, hosted by CenciaPR. The purpose of the blog is "to focus attention on the scientific contributions of Boricuas and Hispanic women and thereby motivate and set an example for future generations of female scientists."[10]

In 2014 following her postdoctoral position, Díaz took a position as Grants Program Director & Science Outreach and Education Initiatives Coordinator at the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust.[11] Since 2017, she has been the Director of the Science Education Program and Community Partnerships of CienciaPR.

In 2019, Díaz was named a AAAS IF/THEN® Ambassador. As part of this program, she was highlighted by NPR and among 14 Ambassadors to be featured in Marie Claire.[12] She has also been profiled as a role model by Million STEM.[9]
