Green Lantern Theory (or Green Lanternism) is a term used to describe the idea that an actor's capacity to achieve some desired end is limited only by their willpower and how much they want to achieve that end. The term is generally used satirically to draw attention to other constraints the actor might face, for example a president may be constrained by an intransigent or divided congress no matter how much she wishes to implement a certain policy. The term Green Lantern Theory was first applied by by Matthew Yglesias to geopolitics as practiced by the United States.[1]

It is named for the Green Lantern, a DC Comics superhero who, with the aid of his green power ring, is able to apply near limitless power through force of will.

Since the term was first coined, Green Lantern Theory has been applied to the US Presidency,[1][2][3] LeBron James, [4] and financial regulation[5].
