Glen R. Serbin (b. 1954, Chicago Illinois) is an influential American publisher[1] who is credited with his life-long promotion of the photography industry globally, and founding the historical and internationally acclaimed Photographer’s Forum magazine, which he operated for more than 30 years.[2]

Serbin is credited with successfully creating notoriety for several influential entities including "The Directory of Illustration, AtEdge,"[3] "Verso Limited Editions,"[4] Lattis Social, Designer Jewelry Showcase, SiteDesignWorks, World Illustration Awards,[5] Eastman Kodak's Photography and Travel Workshop Directory, Play! Illustration & Design for Toys and Interactive Games,[6] Best of Photography Annual, ASMP Stock Photography Catalog, Best of College and High School Photography Annual, Bruce Davidson, Central Park in Platinum, Magnum Founders, Celebrating 60 Years and The Computer Instructor magazine.[7]

Historical Impact

His impact on the photography industry is prolific, exposing avant-garde innovations in photographic art, as well as being one of the first to report on the professional photography industry as a whole.[8] He is also credited with organizing nation-wide photography contests college market with the emerging professionals across America, which launched countless careers and hobbyists globally.[9]

Serbin graduated UCLA in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.[10]

He was the founder, publisher and editor of Photographer's Forum magazine from 1977 to 2018.[11] The magazine was required reading in over 300 college photography programs nationwide and had substantial newsstand circulation. The magazine was the source for new and upcoming photographers and artists.[12][13]

In 1988 The Latvian Cultural Committee invited Serbin to organize a group of professionals to the Soviet Union in order to curate an exhibition of Soviet photography. In 1989 the Santa Barbara Museum of Art exhibited the show and published the companion catalog, Comrades and Cameras; Photography from Latvia and Other Soviet Republics.[14]

In 2013 he was inducted into The Walter Williams Society at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.[15]

He is also a Detroit Institute of Arts Fellow.[16]

Serbin is currently a fine art photographer with a studio in Santa Barbara, California.[17]
