Giuliana Furci (born 12 August 1978, in London) is a Chilean Mycology, speaker, author, and founder of the world's first non-profit organization dedicated solely to Fungus, Fundación Fungi.[1]

Biography

Giuliana was born to a Chilean mother (Ximena George-Nascimento) and Italian father (Carmelo Furci). Her mother was a Chilean refugee in London after fleeing her country due to the 1973 Chilean coup d'état|1973 coup and after being a political prisoner for 365 days between 1973 and 1974.[2] Her father is from the village of Dinami in Calabria, Italy. Giuliana is the granddaughter and great granddaughter of Carlos George-Nascimento and Carlos George-Nascimento Márquez of the Nascimento Editors, Printers and Bookshop best known for being the first to edit Chilean Nobel laureates Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral, among hundreds of others.

At the age of 14 Giuliana’s mother returned to Chile and Giuliana accompanied her.

In 1999, Giuliana began her career as a self-taught mycologist while studying aquaculture in the University of Los Lagos|Universidad de Los Lagos in Osorno, Chile. She traveled through Chile documenting fungi from 2000-2005 with her colleague Carolina Magnasco. This journey, that was funded by Roberto Edwards Eastman of Fundacion America in Chile, yielded a collection of over 6,000 photographs and hundreds of collections of fungi.

In 2005, Giuliana flew to Washington State and took her first class with Paul Stamets at Fungi Perfecti, titled Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Fungi. Upon her return to Chile, Carolina Magnasco and Giuliana opened a Reishi Cultivation farm in Santiago called “Fungi Australe SA” which operated for 2 years before closing due to the choice of not pursuing a career in a for-profit business.[3]

In 2007, Giuliana gave birth to her son Lucas Urzúa Furci, and while breastfeeding she wrote her first book “Fungi Austral”.

From late 2005-2010 Giuliana worked for Terram Foundation as the Aquaculture of salmonids|salmon farming program coordinator striving to stop the negative environmental and social impacts of the salmon farming industry in Chile, and abroad. In 2010 she was offered a position as Researcher at Oceana (non-profit group)|Oceana, a US non-profit organization who works to protect the oceans.

In 2012, Giuliana founded the Fundación Fungi.[4]
