Giorgi (Gogita) Zhu Zhu Nashville (December 20, 1966 – September 26, 2015) — Georgian Historian, Caucasologist, Kartvelologist, former Head of Resource Management Service of the Faculty of Humanities of Tbilisi State University.

Early years

Giorgi Zhuzhunashvili was born on December 20, 1966. In 1984-1991 he studied at the Faculty of History at Tbilisi State University. In 1994-1997 he completed a full time postgraduate course in Source Studies and Historiography of Georgian History. After completing a postgraduate course he defended the dissertation on the topic: "Archival materials of Russia of the XV century - XVIII century as a source of Georgian history". Giorgi Zhuzhunashvili was writing scientific papers on the History of Caucasus, Russia and Georgia.[1]

Scientific work

Giorgi Zhuzhunashvili started his scientific and pedagogical activity in 1995 at Tbilisi State University. Initially, he was a senior teacher at the Department of Russian History, and later an associated professor. In 1999 - 2003 he worked at Samtskhe-Javakheti State University Akhaltsikhe branch of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University of which one of the founders was Giorgi. In 2006, Zhuzhunashvili first became an assistant professor at the Faculty of Humanities, and then an associate professor. At the same time, Giorgi worked as the Head of Resource Management at the Faculty of Humanities.

Georgian historical science has more then 60 works of Giorgi, several of which are monographic. His field and scope of research was wide. Most of his works are about the colonial policy of the Russian Empire in the Caucasus. This issue is mainly represented in the monographs. In 2012, Giorgi Zhuzhunashvili's monograph "Historical Etudes" was published where the historian massed up the works scattered in the various scientific editions. In 2006 and 2009, was published a monograph about Russia-Georgia Relations. Giorgi Zhuzhunashvili is also the co-author of the chrestomathy of the Russian History published in 2005.[1]

"Problems of Caucasian Race and Culture" by Mikhako Tsereteli, translated from German by Giorgi's wife Nana Beridze, was published in 2015 by Giorgi Zhuzhunashvili. In the same year, Giorgi was working on the edition under the title "Because of the unknown letter of Ilia Chavchavadze" together with professor Dimitri Shvelidze. Due to his death there was not published Mikhako Tsereteli's works about the relations of Georgia and Russia also translated from German. Besides the political history Giorgi Zhuzhunashvili's sphere of interest included: Mongol domination in Georgia of the State of Mongol Georgia, the history of the church and the receiving rules of the ambassadors in the middle centuries Georgia. His scientific works are published in Georgian as well as in Russian and Polish languages. Zhuzhunashvili also published his teacher's, professor Valerian Matchardze's manuscripts. He took part in the scientific conferences held in Moscow, Kazan, Kars, Chisinau, St. Petersburg, Tyumen and Poznan. Giorgi Zhuzhunashvili had started working on the textbook "The history of the peoples of the Caucasus" together with his colleagues. In the last years of his life he was working on the artificially created conflicts in the Caucasus Region. Giorgi Zhuzhunashvili his deep knowledge of Russian History used to explain the problems of Georgia and Caucasus History, Russian-Georgian and Georgian-Russian relations.

Giorgi was reading undergraduate and graduate courses at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. His courses are: "Oriental politics of Russia in the XV-XX centuries", "Russia, Georgia and Caucasus Khanates in the XVI-XX centuries", "The history and culture of the Caucasian people". Together with his colleagues Giorgi was working on the textbook under the title "The history of the peoples of the Caucasus" which was stopped by Giorgi Zhuzhunashvili's death.

Giorgi Zhuzhunashvili died on September 26, 2015. [2]

Competition of Caucasologists

In 2012 Giorgi won the competition for the position of a full teaching professor of Caucasian Studies.[3]
