The Georgia School of Technology's Evening School of Commerce was the precursor of what is now Georgia State University. It was founded in 1913 with the intention of functioning as a night school. In the 1930s, a restructuring of the University System of Georgia resulted in the institution becoming the Atlanta Extension Center of the University System of Georgia. This opened the door for night students to acquire degrees from many schools that were part of the University System. During this time period, the educational institution was split into two distinct parts: the Georgia Evening College and the Atlanta Junior College. As of September 1947, the institution was officially recognised as a branch of the University of Georgia and given the designation Atlanta Division of the University of Georgia.
