George Jojo Boateng is a Ghanaian computer scientist, educator, and social entrepreneur. He is known for his work in artificial intelligence, wearable technology, and digital health, as well as his efforts to promote AI education in Africa.[1]
Boateng was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe list in 2023, recognized as one of the IBM New Creators in 2022, and listed in the MIT Technology Review’s 35 Innovators Under 35 in 2021.[1]
Career
Boateng is currently a lecturer of the #AI4Impact course at ETH Zurich[2] He is the co-founder and CEO of Kwame AI Inc.—an artificial intelligence startup that builds personalized knowledge assistants to support learners and professionals such as educators, researchers, and legal practitioners. The company's AI tools include
- Adesua – for science education[3]
- SuaCode – for coding education[4][5]
- Eskwai – for legal research[6]
Kwame AI also spearheads community initiatives including:
- AfricAIED – a workshop on AI in education in Africa[7]
- Brilla AI – an open-source project to develop an AI contestant for Ghana’s National Science and Math Quiz (NSMQ)[8]
Previous Roles
Boateng has previously worked as a visiting researcher at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom and as an applied scientist at Amazon with the Alexa AI team.[9][10]
Education
Boateng earned his Ph.D. in Applied Machine Learning from ETH Zurich in Switzerland, where he studied from 2018 to 2022. He conducted his doctoral research at the Center for Digital Health Interventions (CDHI), focusing on multimodal emotion recognition among couples in both laboratory and real-world settings using smartwatches.[11]
In 2022, he was a visiting researcher at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, where he worked in the Department of Computer Science and Technology.[11]
Boateng also earned a B.A. in Computer Science modified with Engineering from Dartmouth College in 2016. He was a Neukom Scholar and an E.E. Just STEM Scholar. His senior honors thesis, StressAware, involved developing a mobile application to continuously measure and monitor stress levels in real time using the Amulet wearable device.[12]
