Education

He trained in Pediatrics and Neonatology at the Hospitals for Sick Children in London and Toronto and worked as a consultant neonatologist in the National Health Service in the UK before joining Saudi Aramco in 1991[1].

In his 18 years at Aramco[6], he has held various positions including the head of neonatology and the chair of the Healthcare Quality Council. He trained as an improvement adviser at The Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in Boston and studied healthcare management at the Harvard Business School[1] before taking up his role as the head of the American Mission Hospital, Bahrain in 2009.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London), a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, and has a DCH from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, UK, and a Master's degree in Business Administration[7].

He married his classmate from medical college, Dr. Darley, in 1978[1], and they have two sons. His wife, Dr. Darley Cheriyan, retired from Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare, in December 2021, after 27 years of work in Saudi Aramco, as a General Practitioner [8].

According to an interview George Cheriyan gave to the magazine Arabian Knight, their older son is a gastroenterologist in Dublin, Ireland and the younger son is an intensivist in Salt Lake City in Utah, US[8].

Role at AMH

Expansions

After taking over the leadership of American Mission Hospital in 2009, he led its rapid expansion by opening new branches in the country - in Amwaj Islands in 2014[9], in Riffa in 2018[10], and also moved a clinic from a small villa to a large purpose-renovated facility in Saar in 2016 [11]. An accommodation complex for staff was also opened 2019[12].

King Hamad American Mission Hospital

During 2019-2023, his leadership saw the conception, design and construction of the 'King Hamad American Mission Hospital', in A'ali|A'Ali [13][14].

The hospital, which has been declared a strategic project, by Bahrain's EDB or Economic Development Board,[15] was opened by Bahrain's Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, on 26 January 2023 [16] [17] [18][19] .

During its opening, talking to Gulf Construction magazine, Dr George said,

“Our plan envisaged an eco-friendly, aesthetically built hospital with a large garden and ample light. It has to have a feeling of wellness, rather than a hospital where only sick people come.

“The future of healthcare is moving in the direction of preserving health, rather than treatment alone. So preventative wellness and preservation of health is the model for our project.”[15]

Accreditations and Affiliations

In 2017 and 2021, the hospital he led was awarded the ‘Diamond Status’, the highest quality accreditation given by the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA).[20], and in May 2021, the hospital became the first private hospital in Bahrain to achieve the CAP accreditation for its Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and it also became the second hospital in the country, after the government facility King Hamad University Hospital, to achieve this distinction[21].

Collaborations

He has facilitated American Mission Hospital's collaborations with Mayo Clinic[22][23]. and RCSI, Bahrain Chapter [24].
