Geneway Tang (born March 3, 2001) is an American track cyclist specializing in sprint events. He is a member of the USA Cycling National Track Sprint Program and is training toward qualification for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Tang is the first Taiwanese American athlete to be selected for the USA Cycling National Sprint Program.

Early life and education

Tang grew up in Queens Village, New York with two younger siblings. He began cycling at the age of eight through the Star Track youth program at the Kissena Velodrome, where he trained until age 17. At 18, he transitioned to the Pennsylvania-based Edge Cycling team, training under coach Andrew Harris from 2018 to 2024.[1]

Tang earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science, with a minor in data analytics and applied artificial intelligence. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in data analytics, focusing on projects that intersect sport and data science. His academic work includes building predictive models for athlete performance.

Career

National and international competitions

Tang won his first junior national title in the sprint at age 18. In 2021, he became an elite national champion as part of the gold medal-winning team sprint squad.[2]

He represented the United States at several international competitions, including:

  • the 2022 Pan American Track Cycling Championships in Lima, Peru,
  • the 2022 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France[3], and
  • the 2025 Pan American Track Cycling Championships in Asunción, Paraguay.[4]

USA Cycling National Program

In 2024, Tang relocated to Los Angeles to join the USA Cycling National Sprint Program, where he trains under national team sprint coach Justin Grace. He specializes in the sprint, keirin, and team sprint disciplines. As part of the program, Tang participates in performance benchmarking, lab testing, and data-driven training protocols aimed at Olympic preparation.

Coaching and community involvement

Tang is a certified USA Cycling coach. He previously coached with youth development programs at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center in Pennsylvania and currently volunteers at the Velo Sports Center in Carson, California, helping introduce young riders to track cycling.

Personal life

Tang is motivated by the challenge of elite sport and the pursuit of excellence. He balances full-time Olympic training with graduate-level academic work in data analytics. He currently resides in Torrance, California.
