Bishop Gedeon Petrović (Serbian: Гедеон Петровић ; Sombor, 12 November 1770 - Novi Sad, 10 November 1832) was the bishop of the Eparchy of Bačka and one of the most highly educated clerics in the Serbian Orthodox Church. He was Jovan Rajić's successor.

Biography

Bishop Gedeon was born as Đorđe Petrović in Sombor on 12 November 1770. He completed both his elementary and secondary schooling in Sombor, attended the faculty of humanities in Szeged, and philosophy in Pécs. After spending two years in Sombor as a chancellor, Gedeon went to Pest, where he graduated from law school. He then enrolled at the Clerical High School of Saint Arsenije Grande école of "Saint Arsenije Sremac" in Sremski Karlovci. Upon graduation, Đorđe Petrović was introduced to the rank of deacon on 30 July 1798, and on 8 September he was elevated to archdeacon. He was ordained a presbyter on 27 December 1799.

Monastic life

Đorđe Petrović received the monastic rank in the monastery of Krušedol monastery on 30 January 1800, from Archimandrite Jovan Rajić, including the name Gedeon. He received the hororific rank of protosyngellos in the same year on the Annunciation date, on 4 May 1801, from Metropolitan Stefan Stratimirović who also elevated him to the rank of archimandrite of the Krušedol monastery. Before he was elected bishop, Petrović was a teacher at the Serbian Orthodox Theological Institute at Karlovac.

Episcopal vocation

After the death of Jovan Rajić of Eparchy of Bačka in 1805, he became the administrator of the diocese, and on Vidovdan in 1807 he was consecrated bishop of Bačka. Thanks to Bishop Gedeon, the Serbian Gymnasium (school) in Novi Sad was established. Bishop Gedeon donated 2,000 forints for Stratimirović's metropolitan benevolence. Bishop Gedeon made sure that good teachers were appointed in the newly-established high school. In 1826, he founded an endowment for widows of priests and orphans of the Eparchy of Bačka.

Bishop Gedeon (Petrović) died in Novi Sad on 10 November 1832 and was buried in the Novi Sad Cathedral.
