Gaurav Pachnanda (born 09 September 1971) is a Senior Advocate who practices at the Supreme Court of India and other courts and tribunals in the areas of commercial and corporate litigation, including domestic and international arbitration. In September 2016, he became a Door Tenant at Fountain Court Chambers, London.[1] He is also a Registered Foreign Lawyer at the Singapore International Commercial Court.[2]

Early Life and Education

Pachnanda completed his schooling in Jammu in 1989, followed by a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Jammu. He then read law at the University of Jammu in the year 1996 and subsequently at Corpus Christi College, Oxford in 1997 where he was elected as a Felix Scholar, which is granted to outstanding students belonging to India.

Career

Pachnanda began his career as an Advocate in the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir in the year 1997. In 2002, he was appointed as the Additional Advocate General of the State of Jammu and Kashmir. After opting to resign from the position of the Additional Advocate General of the State of Jammu and Kashmir, he relocated to Delhi and joined P&A Law Offices, as its principal litigation lawyer.

He then resumed his independent practice in 2006 and was appointed, in 2010, as the Senior Additional Advocate General for the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir for representing the State before the Apex Court in cases involving complex issues of administrative and constitutional law, a position which he held till 2014. In December 2011, he was designated as a Senior Advocate.[3]

He is regularly briefed as a Senior Advocate to lead in complex commercial disputes by both, Indian public sector undertakings and private multi-national corporations before Indian courts and tribunals as well as in domestic and international commercial arbitrations.[4] He has successfully represented clients like Star India (P) Ltd, WAPCOS Ltd, LG Household and Healthcare Limited, Pacific Convergence Corporation Limited, Aditya Birla Group in various commercial disputes, including several high profile international and domestic arbitrations.[5] He also successfully defended BharatPe in the trademark infringement suit filed against them over the use of the 'Pe' prefix.[6] He was also appointed as an amicus curiae by the Supreme Court in a case concerning the implementation and monitoring of administrative measures regarding the conservation of the ecology of the Lakshadweep Islands and nearby coastal areas in accordance with statutory requirements.[7]

In October 2020, the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir nominated him as a member of the Arbitration Committee of the Jammu and Kashmir International Arbitration Centre.[8] He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Nani Palkhivala Arbitration Centre (NPAC)[9] Pachnanda is also an Honorary Adjunct Professor of Law and Distinguished Professor of Legal Practice at Jindal Global Law School of O.P. Jindal Global University, India, where he teaches Law and Practice of Commercial Litigation and Arbitration in India.[10][11]
