Garazeb "Zeb" Orrelios is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise, voiced by Steven Blum. He is featured as one of the main characters of the animated series Star Wars Rebels (2014–2018) and appears in related works. The character makes his live-action debut in the third season of the television series The Mandalorian (2023), again voiced by Blum.

In Rebels, Zeb is introduced as a Lasat and the former Captain of the Lasan High Honor Guard, one of the first people to rise up against the Empire in its early days. The Imperial response was a genocide campaign against them, almost wiping out his entire species. This near-extinction has left him with a gruff demeanor, but he has remained loyal to the struggle against the Empire. He joined the crew of the Ghost in their rallies against the Empire on Lothal, eventually to discover that his fellow Lasat still exist as a culture on their hidden homeworld of Lira San[1] in the episode "Legends of the Lasat".

Zeb and the crew join the Rebel Alliance to assist them in their fight to free the galaxy as a whole, and face enemies such as the Inquisitors, Darth Vader, and Grand Admiral Thrawn, becoming the Phoenix Squadron's Chief of Security, and participating in many battles against the Empire until its dismantlement. He later joined the New Republic, crossing paths with the Mandalorian Din Djarin.

Creation and development

Concept

Zeb's physical appearance is based on Ralph McQuarrie's original conceptual artwork for Chewbacca. Art director Kilian Plunkett said: "Zeb actually is very articulate and witty and funny, and that's sort of juxtaposed with what he looks like, makes for an interesting character".[2]

Voice acting

The character is voiced by Steven Blum. On his character, Blum developed Zeb's distinctive pattern of speech as a collaborative effort with Dave Filoni and the rest of the crew, ending up with what he himself described as a "bad UK accent".[3]

Appearances

Television

Star Wars Rebels

Zeb debuts as a Lasan and former Captain of the Lasat High Honor Guard, one of the few survivors of the genocide of his people as they rose against the Empire on its early days. As a member of the Ghost crew (reporting under call sign Spectre 4), he is the muscle of the team.

In the series finale "Family Reunion – and Farewell", Zeb takes part in the final battle against Grand Admiral Thrawn and Governor Pryce on Lothal, where he engages in a second confrontation with Thrawn's Noghri assassin Rukh, which ends with him electrocuting the assassin as he traps him on to the coils of a shield generator conductor just before they were activated. Sometime after the Battle of Endor, Zeb brings Kallus to Lira San where the Lasat are currently living.[4]

The Mandalorian

Zeb made his live action debut in the series The Mandalorian with Steven Blum again voicing him. Having joined the New Republic Defense Fleet, he is in charge of instructing new recruits, and an acquiantance of Captain Carson Teva.[5]
