Frank Deer is a Canadian academic and educator of Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) heritage. He is a Professor of Indigenous Education in the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba and a Member of the Royal Society of Canada.[1]
Early life and education
Deer was raised in Kahnawake, a Kanien’kehá:ka community south of Montréal, part of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy.[1] He earned a Bachelor of Education (1999) and a Master of Education (2003) from the University of Manitoba, followed by a Ph.D. in Educational Administration (2008) from the University of Saskatchewan.[2][1]
Career
Prior to entering academia, Deer worked as an elementary school teacher in Northern Manitoba and in Winnipeg’s inner city.[1] He later joined the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba, specializing in Indigenous education, citizenship education, identity studies, and the philosophy of education.[1]
In 2017, he was appointed a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Education.[3]
Deer is a member of the Royal Society of Canada.[4]
