Foundation for Peace is a nonprofit organization founded in 2003 that supports healthcare initiatives, educational programs, and community-based partnerships in underserved communities. The organization operates primarily in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Kenya through volunteer and community-based programs.[1]
History
In 1962, Alberto Martinez Lugo and his wife Rosalina Martinez emigrated from Puerto Rico to the Dominican Republic, where they engaged in medical outreach and founded the Iglesia de Dios Pentecostal M.I. denomination. Their work laid early groundwork for faith-based medical and community initiatives in the region.[2]
In August 1989, Ken Culver participated in a youth mission trip from National Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., to the Dominican Republic, working alongside the Martinez family. Continued collaboration with local churches and community leaders led to recurring mission trips and expanded volunteer participation.[3]
Foundation for Peace was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization in 2003. Since its founding, the organization reports that more than 12,000 volunteers from the United States and Canada have participated in programs across its three primary countries of operation.
Organization and governance
Foundation for Peace operates as a U.S.-based non-governmental organization. The organization is registered as an approved charity in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Governance is provided by a Board of Directors in the United States and the Dominican Republic.
Programs and operations
The organization focuses on three primary program areas: healthcare, education, and community partnerships.
Healthcare initiatives include medical and nursing mission teams that provide health screenings, basic medical care, health education, and access to medicines in underserved communities. These efforts are conducted in collaboration with local medical staff and community organizations.[4][5]
Foundation for Peace supports mobile medical clinics and volunteer medical teams that serve underserved populations in the Dominican Republic and Kenya.[6][7][8]
Educational programs include the provision of school supplies, teacher support, student sponsorships, school construction projects, and partnerships with local and government education departments. These programs serve both children and adults.Community partnership initiatives are developed in response to locally identified priorities and may include construction of schools, churches, community centers, medical clinics, housing projects, sanitation systems, food distribution programs, and support for people with disabilities and orphaned children.
