Forsyth Barr is a New Zealand financial services company and an accredited NZX Market Participant.[1][2] It operates 25 offices nationwide and, as at December 2023, advises on more than NZ$30 billion in client assets.[1][3]

History

Forsyth Barr was established in Dunedin in 1936 and diversified its services over time, with sources noting the introduction of fixed-interest monitoring in the 1970s and the later addition of cash-management, nominee and portfolio-management services; the 1990s also saw the launch of a retirement fund.[4]

The company expanded geographically across New Zealand during these decades and in a subsequent growth phase around 2009–2010.[5][6]

It now operates 25 offices providing investment advisory and portfolio management services covering over $30 billion of clients’ investments.[1][7]

Early history: From foundation to 2010

1936 – Forsyth Barr established in Dunedin by Robert (Peter) Forsyth Barr[8]

1948 – Murray Sidey and Keith Skinner join as partners[9]

1961 – Val Braumann (Forsyth Barr's longest-serving employee) starts as a book-keeper[10]

1972 – Sir Eion Edgar KNZM and Michael Devereaux join as partners[11][12]. Eion was Chairman of Forsyth Barr for 20 years until 2018[13]

1980 – Michael Sidey joins Forsyth Barr

1985 – Forsyth Barr Limited partnership established

1987 – Christchurch office opened with Michael Sidey as Manager[14]

1998 – Neil Paviour-Smith joins Forsyth Barr, becoming the managing director in 2001[15]

2000 – Frater Williams (and it's Hamilton and Tauranga offices) merges with Forsyth Barr[16]

2001 – Leveraged Equities purchased by Forsyth Barr[17]

2009 – Sponsorship of Forsyth Barr Stadium commences[18]

- Munro Hubbard acquired and becomes Forsyth Barr's Timaru office[19]

Recent history: 2010 – 2025

2010 – Esam Cushing acquired, and becomes Forsyth Barr's Hastings office[20]

2011 – Forsyth Barr Stadium opens[21]

2023 – Hobson Wealth acquired by Forsyth Barr[28]

Offices

As at December 2023, Forsyth Barr operated 25 offices across New Zealand.[1][30]

The network expanded in 2009–2010, with new offices in Whangārei and Auckland's North Shore,[31] followed by Queenstown in April 2010; during that period the firm also added branches in Cambridge, Ashburton, Timaru and New Plymouth.[32]

More recently, Forsyth Barr opened a Central Otago office in Wānaka in February 2020 following the acquisition of Aspiring Wealth Management,[33] established a Masterton office in 2021,[34] and opened in Marlborough (Blenheim) in 2023.[35]

Forsyth Barr Stadium

In 2009, Forsyth Barr secured the naming rights for Dunedin's covered stadium, which became known as Forsyth Barr Stadium.[36] The stadium was officially opened in August 2011.[37]

Memberships

Forsyth Barr is a Foundation Firm and accredited Market Participant of the New Zealand Exchange Limited (NZX).[38]
