Floyd Harold Chilton, best known as Ski Chilton, (born October 31, 1957) is an American innovator in a wide range of areas including academic professor, entrepreneur, author, and inventor[1][2]. Chilton is widely recognized in academia and industry for his work on nutrition in the context of variation in the human genome and personalized or precision nutrition and wellness[2]. He has authored of five lay books focused on nutrition, diet, and physical and mental health[2].

Career

After completing his PhD in Biochemistry at Wake Forest School of Medicine and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1986, Chilton began an independent research career at Johns Hopkins Medical Center and Wake Forest University School of Medicine for 32 years[3]. In 2018, he accepted a position at the University of Arizona where he currently works as a professor in the School of Nutritional Sciences and Wellness and as director of the Center for Precision Nutrition and Wellness[2][4]. Additionally, he is the founder or co-founder of five startup companies and one non-profit company and holds numerous U.S. patents[2]. Over the span of his career, he has also written lay books for the public on nutrition, health, and well-being and worked with non-profit organizations providing aide to Sudan[2].

Research

His work places an emphasis on elucidating how ancestry-based genetics interact with the modern Western diet to drive major health disparities in human populations. His research utilizes a multi-omics approach (genomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics) along with high resolution statistical and machine learning approaches to discern the molecular and genetic underpinnings of human diseases. Chilton has had over 35 years of continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health and has published over 180 peer-reviewed scientific papers[5], reviews and book chapters[2].

Patents and Business

Chilton holds numerous patents in the field of inflammation, medical foods, biomarkers of disease progression and omega-3 fatty acid production, many of which have been licensed. His patents played a pivotal role in pioneering the medical foods category for the management of inflammatory disease, such as asthma and allergic rhinitis, and have created precision enabled therapeutics that target life threatening diseases[4][2].

Chilton has also cofounded and held leadership positions in several business ventures related to human health. These business ventures include Resonance Pharma, LLC, TyrianOmega, LLC, Pilot Therapeutics, Inc, and GeneSmart Health LLC, and MyMemoryNotebook, LLC. Chilton served as the President and CEO of Pilot Therapeutics from 2000 to 2003[6]. During that time, he took the company public and was named as an Ernst and Young, Entrepreneur of the Year for the Carolinas in 2003[2][6].

Books

Chilton has also written five lay books. Four of these, Inflammation Nation (Simon and Schuster), Win the War Within (Rodale), The Gene Smart Diet (Rodale), and Made to Crave Action Plan (Zondervan), address the impact of the modern Western diet and lifestyles on the incidence and severity of human diseases (especially inflammatory) [2]. These books also provide clinically proven healthy lifestyle approaches to eating, nutrition and exercise to address weight loss and disease management. His fifth book, The Rewired Brain (Baker Books), addresses the issue of the unconscious mind, its capacity to negatively impact our lives, and how thought patterns induce genetic (epigenetic) changes that alter brain circuitry[2].

Humanitarian Work

Dr. Chilton has worked with humanitarian organizations in Africa since 2005. He is the founder and president of the not-for-profit Heroes Helping Heroes, and he is on the Board of Directors of the Persecution Project Foundation and The World Shoe Fund[2].
