Fier is the seventh most populous city in the Republic of Albania, and it serves as the county and municipal capital for the same name. On the Myzeqe Plain, it is located on the bank of the Gjanica River, between the mountains of the Seman to its north, the Vjos Mountains to its south, and the foothills of the Mallakastra Mountains to its southeast. Fier has a seasonal Mediterranean climate, which is influenced by its closeness to the Adriatic Sea in the west and the Mediterranean Sea in the east.

Kahreman Pasha Vrioni's family created Fier in the nineteenth century, and it was formally established in 1864 by Omer Pasha Vrioni II, who was the father of Kahreman Pasha Vrioni (1889-1955). It is located around 11 kilometres (7 miles) from the remains of the ancient village of Apollonia, which was built in 588 BCE by Ancient Greek immigrants from Corfu and Corinth on land that had previously been held by Illyrian tribes.

Fier is a major transportation hub in southern Albania. It is serviced by the A2 motorway and the SH 4 highway, which together create a north–south corridor in Albania and a segment of the Adriatic–Ionian highway system.
