Fidelis Macdonald Molao (born c. 1977) is a Motswana politician and former Botswana National Youth Council (BNYC) Executive Director now serving as the Member of Parliament for Shashe West Constituency; an elective position he has defended since wining the constituency byelection in September, 2010 following the passing of the then Member of Parliament, Baledzi Gaolathe.[5][6][7][8]

Molao is the Minister of Agriculture in President Mokgweetsi Masisi's cabinet, he was first appointed to Cabinet initially on acting capacity by former president Seretse Khama Ian Khama on March 1st, 2015.[9][10]

Early life

Molao was born in Mathangwane in circa 1977, he is the fifth child in the family. Molao started his primary education at Mathangwane Primary School from where he transferred to Mpatane Primary School where he obtained his Primary School Leaving Certificate.

Molao was there after admitted at Chamabona Junior Secondary School where he obtained Junior Certificate in Education before progressing to Mater Spei College in Francistown from where he obtained his Cambridge Overseas School Certificate in 1995.[5]

Molao served his Tirelo Sechaba (TS) in Boteti from 1996 to 1997 where he was assigned to the Social and Community Development office. Apon completing TS, Molao enrolled with the University of Botswana (UB) for Bachelor of Arts in Humanities majoring in History and English where he graduated in 2001.

Professional life

Molao briefly worked on temporary appointments for the then Department of Teaching Service Management (TSM); which has since been merged into the Directorate of Public Service Management, and was deployed at Moeti Junior Secondary School and Moeding College where he taught English and History respectively.[5]

He then moved to Sefalana Holding Company Limited in Gaborone which at the time was one of the prominent unofficial Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) young Democrats incubators. Molao left Sefalana Holding Company Limited to take up a BDP appointment at Tsholetsa House as the party Deputy Executive Secretary, a position through where in his final year he oversaw the 2008/9 Bulela Ditswe and that can also be viewed as his last BDP on-job training post.[11]

Molao left Tsholetsa House to become the Executive Director of BNYC in November 2009 where besides being there for a very short stint of less than a year, his political aspirations pitted him against his then boss, the then Minister of Youth Sports and Culture and also a Member of Parliament for Bobonong Constituency, Shaw Kgathi.[12][13]

Active Politics

Molao became actively involved in politics while a student at UB where he was an active member of GS-26; the UB students wing of the BDP.[14] Unlike some of his peers then at GS-26, Molao stint in a professional career job was very short; he only worked as a temporary teacher with TSM, all other appointments he held were BDP orchestrated undeclared party development.

Molao broke ranks, refusing to remain in the party development in 2010 having been motivated by another youth at the time, Hon. Wynter Mmolotsi. While Molao was the BDP media face then by virtue of his position in the party of Deputy Executive Secretary, Hon. Mmolotsi appealed against the BDP Central Committee's decision of preventing him from contesting in the Francistown South 2008/9 Bulela Ditswe which appeal Hon. Mmolotsi won and ultimately won both Bulela Ditswe and the General Elections.[15][16]

When suspicions of Molao's intensions to contest for the then Tonota North impending byelection grew, Shaw Kgathi was deployed by the party to stop Molao. Kgathi used Molao's position then, of the Executive Director at BNYC as hindrance for being politically active to which Molao resigned leaving BDP with no other means of stopping him.[13] Molao went on to win BDP Bulela Ditswe and ultimately the area byelection.[17][18]

Molao has since won at all Bulela Ditswe and General Elections that followed after his first entry to parliament. He has also served in different portfolios in the cabinets of presidents Seretse Khama Ian Khama and Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi. He is currently the Minister of Agriculture.

Personal life

Molao is a family man.[19]
