Occupationwriter and screenwriter

Ferran Guallar is a writer and screenwriter born in Barcelona in 1968. Before dedicating himself to literature, he was a notable activist and conservationist, taking responsibility for the creation and development of nature conservation and environmental education programs, mainly in Africa. This experience has had a clear and notable influence on his first literary work[1][2].

Activism and Conservation

Ferran Guallar has been a notable conservationist who served as president of the Jane Goodall Institute[3][4] in Spain, Europe, and West Africa in Senegal. Guallar was the creator of the West African Chimpanzee Conservation Program and established two protected areas in this African subregion: the Dindefelo Community Reserve[5] and the Goumbambere Reserve, which is located adjacent to the former. He also promoted the environmental education program BioDiverCiudad, in collaboration with the Biodiversity Foundation[6] and other entities such as the Banesto Foundation.

Literary Career

In addition to his work in conservation, Ferran Guallar is known for his work as a writer and creative writing teacher. He has written the novel La parte salvaje (The Wild Part), published in 2022 in Catalan by Editorial Empúries and in Spanish by Editorial Navona[7][8][9]. This novel is clearly influenced by his experience as a conservationist in Africa. La parte salvaje is a profound reflection on conservation, power, and human nature. It explores the intersection of anthropology and ecological activism, and contemplates the human condition and the struggle for environmental conservation. Additionally, the novel offers a critical perspective on power structures within NGOs and the internal struggles that often divert these organizations from their ideals.

Study published in 2013 where Guallar and his co-authors documented for the first time the presence of the vulnerable species Genetta johnstoni in the Dindefelo Community Reserve in Senegal. This discovery suggests that the species may inhabit certain mosaic habitats of forests and savannas.
