He moved to South Texas at a young age near McAllen, Texas, a border town.[1] He studied at the (now called) University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). Fernando Flores eventually dropped out of college but was hired as an employee. He was attracted to literature, so he passed his time as an audiovisual technician by learning and reading at the university's library.[2]
Career
Fernando A. Flores moved to Austin, Texas, to pursue his career as a writer. He won an honorable mention award from the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation. The Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation was founded in 2000 to honor Sandra Cisneros' father. This grant is available to authors who were born in, write about, or live in Texas. Recipients are chosen for their extraordinary talent as well as their deep dedication to their literary work. Fernando Flores has two published books, Tears of the Truffle Pig and Death to the Bullshit Artists of South Texas.
Fernando Flores works part-time at Malvern Books in Austin, Texas, an Indie bookstore concentrating on lesser-known writers. Working at Malvern Books allows Flores to write. Since 2006, his fiction and poetry have appeared in a variety of publications.
Awards & Recognition
Awards
In September 2014, Flores was awarded the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation grant. On La Bloga, "the world's longest-established Chicana Chicano, Latina Latino literary blog," Sandra Cisneros mentions the reason behind the foundation. She states, "My father lived his life as an example of generosity and honest labor. Even as he warned us to save our centavitos (coin), he always gave away his own. [He was] a meticulous craftsman, he would [rather] rip the seams of a cushion apart and do it over than put his name on the item that wasn't up to his high standards. I especially want to honor his memory by an award showcasing writers who are equally proud of their own craft." He credits his ability to finish Tears of the Trufflepig to the $10,000 writing reward he received from the San Antonio–based grant.
In the same year, Fernando was nominated for the Pushcart Prize.
Recognition
In 2015, Flores earned a spot on Texas Monthly's Ten Writers to Watch list.
