Felischa Marye is an American television writer and producer. Marye is best known for being the creator and writer of the show Bigger,[1] which debuted on the BET+ streaming platform during the 2018-2019 fall lineup.[2] In 2017, Marye was hired as a staff writer on the hit Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.[3]

Early life

Marye was born in Chicago and raised by her great-grandparents in the inner-city. Marye initially attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as an acting student but transitioned into broadcast journalism.[4] Marye worked at a public relations and marketing agency after graduating, eventually becoming vice president.[5] Marye quit her job in 2011, and enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles Masters of Fine Arts screenwriting program.[6] While attending UCLA Marye competed and won various film, fellowship and writing competitions including; the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and Streisand/Sony Fellowship, Film Independent’s Project Involve Award, and the Entertainment Weekly Award.[7] In 2013, while participating in the Film Independent Fellowship, Marye was introduced to a development executive of a comedy series who invited her to pitch a television pilot idea.[8] Marye presented her original script Peachtree Place[9] to renowned Hollywood producer Will Packer who brought along veteran writer Devon Shepard and decided to develop an edgier comedic version of the original show and rename it Bigger. [10]

Career

In 2017, Marye was hired as a staff writer on the Netflix series13 Reasons Why, but did not receive official writing credit until season 2 episode 208 (The Little Girl).[11] Season three of 13 Reasons Why was released in 2018, with Marye stepping into the role of writer and story editor. She was credited on episode 308 titled, "In High School, Even on a Good Day, It's Hard to Tell Who's on Your Side." [12] During a 2019 interview with MEAWW.com, Marye discussed the shows controversial topics telling the interviewer that "We have to talk about it, It could be argued in what ways to talk about it, but I think the intent there was just to say be aware of your comments," said Marye.[13]

After Netflix, Marye joined BET+ as the creator and co-executive producer of the web series Bigger.[14] Bigger was screened in Atlanta, GA on August 23, 2019 at the BronzeLens Film Festival following the official series launch on September 19, 2019.[15] The show follows three friends, Tanisha Long in the role of Layne Roberts, Angell Conwell (Veronica Yates) [16] and Rasheda Crockett (Tracey Davis) as they navigate their mid 30s. [17]

The central theme of the show stems from the random death of a college acquaintance and how the group uses that tragedy to delve into their own personal life journey,[18] and determine if there is anything Bigger for them.[19]

On February 18, 2020, BET+ announced that the series was renewed for a second season.[20]
