Fei Liu Fine Jewellery is an eponymous jewellery brand founded by designer and jeweller Fei Liu in 2006. The award-winning brand is known for its couture and high jewellery pieces, blending Liu’s Chinese heritage with a contemporary, Western aesthetic[1].

History

Fei Liu is a Chinese-born designer and jeweller. An early passion for gemstones and design was sparked during a visit to Hong Kong[2]. In 1998, Fei Liu became the first mainland Chinese-born student to enrol in the Birmingham School of Jewellery. There, he studied the design and craft of jewellery.

After graduation, Fei Liu worked as a designer in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter. While employed as Head of Design for a fine jeweller, a fire at home destroyed his personal collection of jewellery and gemstones. Liu describes the event as a catalyst for a new beginning, and he launched his own company shortly afterwards[3].

Fine Jewellery Design

The Fei Liu Fine Jewellery signature is a meeting of East and West. Liu draws on his personal background, blending influences from Chinese and British design. The brand’s designs often feature high-value or rare gemstones, set in gold or platinum[4].

Fei Liu specialises in creating bespoke high-jewellery pieces valued between US$1,000,000 and $1,500,000. Many of Fei Liu’s pieces are one-of-a-kind, bespoke designs created for private collectors in the UK, Europe, China and the USA[5].

Fei Liu Fine Jewellery also manufactures a range of designs for retail sale, including collections in silver, set with cubic zirconia and pearls. Liu’s pieces are designed in their head office in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter, United Kingdom.

Awards and Recognition

Fei Liu has been recognised with a number of awards for his design and jewellery. In 2009. Fei Liu’s Whispering Ring received the ‘Editors Choice’ award at the International Jewellery London (IJL) exhibition[6]. In 2011, Fei Liu received the Lonmin Design Innovation Award for his 17th-century Qing dynasty Kingfisher feather and turquoise earrings, following a win in 2009 for his platinum Allure ring[7].

In 2012, Harpers Bazaar China awarded Liu with ‘Designer of the Year’. In 2018, the same magazine recognised Fei Liu Fine Jewellery with ‘Best Online Jeweller’. In 2016, Fei Liu received the ‘Designer of the Year’ award at the UK Jewellery Awards[8].

National & International Presence

Fei Liu is currently stocked in around 85 boutiques and retailers across the UK, alongside an international client base. As part of the UK National Association of Jewellers (NAJ), Fei Liu has participated in exhibitions showcasing British design, showing in the USA, Europe, the Middle East and Japan[9].

Although the brand is based in Birmingham, United Kingdom, Fei Liu maintains ties to the country of his birth. In 2010, Liu hosted an exhibition of British jewellery design talent at the brand’s flagship store in Beijing[10]. In 2017, Fei Liu collaborated with the New Silkroutes Group Ltd to create a sapphire and diamond set crown for the Miss World China pageant in Dalian, China[11]. Valued at around 4 to 5 million British pounds, the ‘Blue of Dreams’ crown is one of the most expensive tiaras in global beauty contests[12].

Charitable Works

Since March 2020, Fei Liu Fine Jewellery has donated pieces from the sterling silver ‘Carpe Diem’ collection to recognise individuals who have done good work within their communities[13]. The brand has also organised a fundraiser for Birmingham Children's Hospital[14].

Notable Fans

Fei Liu’s jewellery has been worn by numerous celebrities and notable figures, including television presenter Amanda Holden[15], television personality Gemma Collins[16], actor Zhang Ziyi, model Jodie Kidd and actor Eva Longoria.

In 2014, Fei Liu met with King Charles and Queen Camilla (then Prince Charles and Duchess of Cornwall) at the Birmingham School of Jewellery[17]. Fei showed the couple a selection of his pieces and gifted the Prince of Wales a pair of silver cufflinks.
