Eze Dr. Maxwell Omeire Kanu was a Nigerian public figure, traditional ruler, and businessman. He was the Traditional Ruler of Ejezie Autonomous Community, Arondizuogu in Imo State, Nigeria, and the Life Chairman of Agura Hotel Abuja.

Early life

Kanu was born into the family of Kanu Onwubiko in Arondizuogu, Imo State, Nigeria on April 12, 1932. He was the twelfth child of his father's sixteen wives. After completing his primary education, Kanu began his entrepreneurial career by trading in various goods such as bicycle parts, tires, and tomatoes. In 1967, during the Nigerian Civil War, he played a supportive role. [1]

Kanu's business grew rapidly, and he eventually started his own brand of iron tonic tablets and balms. Kanu was a major stockfish importer, and he eventually became the President of the Stockfish Importers Association of Nigeria. Kanu was also known for his philanthropy and love for the Igbo nation.[2] During the Nigerian Civil War in 1967, he supported the Biafran government by mobilizing food and other supplies for soldiers and refugees in the Aba sector of the conflict.

Politics

Kanu was a strong advocate for the unity of Nigeria and did not engage in local or regional politics. He only associated with political parties that promoted national unity [3]During the Second Republic, he was a key figure in the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in Imo State and played a vital role in the election of Sir Onyeso Nwachukwu as Chairman of the NPN in Imo State. He was appointed Traditional Ruler of Ejezie Arondizuogu Community. [4]

Agura Hotel

Kanu was a major contributor to the development of the new Federal Capital of Nigeria, Abuja. [5] According to Sun News Online, in the early 1980s, Kanu invested hundreds of millions of naira of his personal funds into the first hospitality industry in Abuja, the Agura Hotel. [6]
