Express Solicitors is a UK based personal injury law firm, ranked in the Legal 500..[1] The firm specialises in road traffic accidents, accidents at work, public liability, serious and catastrophic injuries and clinical negligence. The headquarters is based in Manchester, England, and there are more than 600 employees.

In August 2023, Express Solicitors had a 4.7/5 review score on Trustpilot[2] and was recognised as one of the UK’s ‘Best Companies’[3] to work for with a 2 star accreditation for ‘outstanding levels of employee engagement’. There are approximately 9,500 law firms[4] operating in the UK and the firm is ranked 80th in the Lawyer Top 100, rising 13 places in 2023.[5] This list includes the UK law firms with the highest turnover. Express Solicitors is also recognised in Chambers and Partners.

History

Express Solicitors was founded in 2000[6] by Managing Partner James Maxey. In 2003, Daniel Slade, who was appointed as the head of the Public Liability team. Since 2014 Express Solicitors has operated as a limited company. The Practice is regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.[7]

In 2023 the company announced plans to consolidate its four offices, relocating[8] to a new office space in Manchester. This will allow the firm to expand from to 1,000 employees[9] in line with their target to turnover £60 million in the next five years[10].

Express Solicitors offers around 60 solicitors training contracts[11] a year. The firm is also authorised to provide pupillage training for barristers by the Bar Standards Board[12] and has an in-house Advocacy department employing a number of Barristers.

Acquisitions

  • April 2014 - Purchased Lavin Copitch Solicitors Limited[13]
  • May 2015 - Acquired the caseload of Ashfields Solicitors[14] in a pre-pack from Administration
  • February 2018 - Acquired the personal injury cases of Edward Hands & Lewis[15] who were moving out of personal injury
  • November 2020 - Acquired McKays Solicitors Limited
  • December 2020 - Acquired the personal injury work of Lance Mason who were moving out of personal injury
  • August 2021 - Acquired the caseload of Lyons Wilson who were closing
  • November 2021 - Acquired the caseload of GWS Solicitors[16] who were closing down
  • October 2022 - Acquired the entirety of Michael W Halsall Solicitors[17]
  • December 2022 - Acquired the personal injury caseload of Knowles Benning/Linder Myers Solicitors
  • July 2023 – Acquired Manchester personal injury firms, Amelans Solicitors and Jefferies Solicitors[18]

Charity partnerships

Express Solicitors’ 2022 and 2023 charity[19] of the year was Burning Nights CRPS, dedicated to helping those affected by Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. Forever Manchester, Trussell Trust South, Stockport Foodbank and Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital are other charities supported by Express Solicitors.

The company donates time, funding and resources to national organisations such as Children In Need, Comic Relief, Cancer Research UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, Dementia UK and Amnesty International.

Diversity and inclusion

Express Solicitors has a diversity and inclusion group within the firm. Employees come from a wide selection of regions, speaking over 20 languages and 25% of the workforce identify as BAME. As a company, Express Solicitors celebrates Pride Month and provides emergency sanitary products in every bathroom across all buildings.

The firm has 70% of the workforce and 52.5% of partners identifying as female.[20] Regular company events are held to raise awareness of topics and communities. In addition, each employee also has the option to have their pronouns displayed in both internal and external emails.

In 2023 nearly 10% of the workforce was promoted[21]
