Eva Marie (or Maria) Smith (d.2 June 1961) was a British mathematician and educationalist, who was principal of Edge Hill College from 1920-41.
Early life and education
She was educated at City of London School for Girls and Newnham College, Cambridge where she studied mathematics. At Cambridge, she was ranked equal to the 16th wrangler, being the only female wrangler of her year[1] and was awarded the Arthur Hugh Clough scholarship. She was subsequently a fellow in mathematics at Bryn Mawr College from 1908-09[2].
Career
She served as a maths mistress at Cheltenham Ladies College from 1910-16, and then as headmistress of Rotherham Municipal High School from 1916-20. In 1920, she was appointed as Principal of Edge Hill College, then a teaching training college for women. She oversaw the relocation of the college from its its original site in Durning Road, Liverpool (where it had been since 1885) to its present location in Ormskirk. She then oversaw a temporary move to Bingley College, Yorkshire for the duration of the Second World War (as the Ormskirk site was used as a military hospital). She retired in 1941.[3]
