European Guanxi is a European youth-led non-profit organization that aims to develop a network of young professionals, scholars, and students engaged in relations between Europe and China.[1][2][3]

History

European Guanxi was established on 3 October 2020 by a group of 14 co-founders, including students and early-career professionals from various European countries.[1][4] By March 2021, the organization had grown to 500 members.[2]

Activities

European Guanxi undertakes several initiatives related to EU-China relations:

  • Weekly publication of articles on its website.[5]
  • The annual European Guanxi Youth Conference (EGYC), which produces policy recommendations on Europe–China relations.[6]
  • The European Youth Perspectives on International Relations of China (EYPIC) journal, an online publication focused on Sino-European relations.[7]
  • Online and in-person events, including expert talks, interactive webinars, and information sessions for students.[8][9] Past guests have included Kerry Brown, Daniel A. Bell, Alicia García-Herrero, and Fidel Sendagorta.
  • The European Guanxi Podcast, which covers topics related to EU-China affairs.[10]

Partnerships

On 2 June 2021, lead co-founder Patrizia Cogo Morales represented the organization at the “6th Ad-hoc Meeting on European Research Networks on China,” organized by the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission under the EU-KNOC initiative.[11]

From August to September 2021, European Guanxi participated in an expert consultation exercise organized by the European Parliamentary Research Service; the results were published in December 2022 on the European Parliament website.[12][13]

In the same year, the organization partnered with Polis180 and the Student Think Tank for Europe-Asia Relations (STEAR) to launch the Young Indo-Pacific Forum (YIPF).[14] The forum held its first edition in Brussels in November 2021, attended by over 300 participants. A second edition took place in December 2022, in collaboration with the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS).[15][16]
