Esther Anumu Fordham (October 9, 1925 - 2019) was known for her interview on growing up as a black person in Nazi Germany.[1][2]
History
In 1926 Esther was sent to a private orphanage in Groß Borstel and lived there for 10 years.[3] When Esther started to go to school in 1932 she used a Tram to go to the waldorf school.
Nazi Germany
When Adolf Hitler got power in Germany her school shut down due to her skin color "affecting the education" because some parents in the school were making complaints about Esther being there.[3][4] Esther could also not go to school, university, swimming halls, sports events, and she lost her citizenship due to her skin color, but she never experienced any direct hate from people in Nazi Germany.[3][5][6] To support the family her mother ran a shop called Found Treasure which she ran with her friend. Esther recalls one time when she was young when Hitler visited Hamburg in a car she would have to go there and see Hitler and was pushed back if she got too close to Hitler which is the only time she remembered seeing Hitler, due to him not visiting Hamburg often.[3]
Jews
Esther also knew what was happening to the jews due to her girlfriend being half jewish, her girlfriend had to wear the yellow star[7] and later she would get sent to a concentration camp because of her fathers religion, her girlfriend's entire family would survive the war.[3][8][9]
