Esau Geoffrey Williams is a civil servant, journalist, and presenter.[1][2][3][4][5]
Education
Esau Williams is a graduate of Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas with a bachelor's degree in Philosophy.[6][7] He obtained a BA (Hons) in Politics with Philosophy from Royal Holloway, University of London.[7] He also holds an MA in International Political Economy awarded by King's College London.[1][7]
Career
Williams presented Focus on Africa, the BBC World Service’s flagship news and current affairs radio programme for Africa.[8] [9][10] He also anchored a special series of guest-edited Focus on Africa programme featuring prominent Africans, including Professor Thuli Madonsela, law professor and the first female Public Protector of South Africa.[11]
In 2021, he was sent to cover the Gambian presidential election for the BBC and presented and reported on location.[12][13][14] He interviewed Ghana's then former president, John Mahama, who was in The Gambia as an election observer at the time.[15]
Williams is an expert on the politics of The Gambia and has written and commented on the subject for the BBC.[16][17][18]
Esau has also interviewed the former British prime minister Tony Blair on the BBC in 2021. The interview discussed the challenges facing Africa caused by the Delta variant of the Corona Virus, and Tony Blair’s advocacy for an increase in the availability of COVID vaccines to the continent.[19] David Sengeh, Chief Minister of Sierra Leone, who was Minister for Education at the time in 2022.He has written opinion pieces on UK politics which were published in the History News Network[20] at George Washington University; Inside Sources,[21] and the SMU blog.[6] Williams has trained journalists at the Media Academy for Journalism and Communication in The Gambia.[22][23][24][25] He has also served as chair of the panel of judges for the 2021 and 2022 National Journalism Awards in The Gambia.[26][27]
In the autumn of 2024, he was appointed as the new host of the podcast, WORLD: we got this with Esau Williams, [28][29] produced by the School of Global Affairs at King's College London.[30][31][32][33][34]
Awards
Williams presented the daily News About Ebola programme[35] which won a Peabody Award for the BBC World Service for coverage of the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa.[36]
