Ervin Malakaj (*1983) is an academic and writer based in Vancouver, Canada.[1]

Early Life

Malakaj was born in the former Yugoslavia. In 1992, his family fled the war in Bosnia & Herzegovina and lived as refugees in Germany until 1999.[2] Thereafter the family moved to Chicago, where Malakaj attended Amundsen High School and wrote for New Expressions, a the local newspaper run by high school students in the city.[3]

Academic Work

Malakaj completed his B.A. (2007) and M.A. (2009) in German studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago.[4] In 2009, he started a doctoral program in Germanic languages and literatures at Washington University in St. Louis, which he completed in 2015.[5]

In 2012, Malakaj became the Vice President before in 2013 assuming the role of President of the Graduate Student Caucus of the Modern Language Association.[6]

From 2015 to 2018, Malakaj served as the coordinator of the German program at Sam Houston State University. Together with colleagues in history, Malakaj taught a seminar titled "#BlackLivesMatter" in Sam Houston State University's honors college. Conservative bloggers and eventually FOX News picked up on the course and started a media campaign against it and its conveners, including Malakaj.[7] The incident caused a media scandal for the university, which led to the university defending Malakaj and his colleagues.[8]

Since 2018, Malakaj teaches and researches in German studies at the University of British Columbia, where he was awarded tenure in 2023.[9] His area of scholarship focuses on queer German studies. Malakaj is the author of an academic monograph on Richard Oswald's iconic 1919 film Anders als die Andern (Different from the Others).[10]

In 2016, Malakaj co-founded the international scholarly collective Diversity, Decolonization, and the German Curriculum.[11]

Recognition

In 2023, Malakaj was awarded the Jakob un Wilhelm Grimm Förderpreis by the German Academic Exchange Service. The award recognizes his contribution to the field of international German studies.[12]
