Ernest Mansfield (1862–1924) was an English entrepreneur who became known for ambitious projects such as the mining of marble on the site of Blomstrandhalvoya in Kongsford, north-western Svalbard, which he initiated in 1911 on behalf of the Northern Exploration Company Ltd (NEC), headed by himself.[1][2]
He had also previously tried prospecting for gold in Klondike, British Colombia, Australia and New Zealand. It was in his search for gold in Svalbard that he came across the marble deposit, which eventually proved to be worthless and had to be closed in 1920.[1][3]
The site of Blomstrandhalvoya has become an important cultural heritage site in Svalbard.[1]
In addition to mining and prospecting, he pursued many different activities in his life including music, teaching and journalism.[2][4]
