Ernest Ham was born in Wareham Dorset on the 21st of June 1874 one of four brothers and three sisters. The family moved to Southall in 1889 when his father was offered the job as Clerk in Charge of the construction of a new police station at Norwood Green, Southall, which was completed in 1890. His ancestors had arrived in England from France in 1190 and over the coming centuries the family name changed from D'Lacey to Ham He married Rosa Lidstone in 1901 at St John’s church Southall He worked as a salesman for Abbot Brothers Southall throughout his working life although he was a talented craftsman, working mainly in wood. He was a chronic Asthma sufferer and other chest complaints so he spent as much time in the open air as possible, he was a keen cyclist and he also played bowls at the Southall Bowling Club.

He painted many water colors and oil paintings of Devon and Cornwall and also of Castle Combe in Wiltshire while on holiday. But his main passion was to paint and preserve the history of Southall and over 70 of his paintings were given to Southall Library after his death. A few of his paintings have ended up in Chiswick Library because they were scenes of subjects in the neighbouring borough of Hounslow these paintings can also be viewed by appointment with Chiswick Library.

Although these paintings are not on display, you can go and visit them by appointment with Southall Library. He died on the 1st February 1958 Aged 83 years and is buried in St Johns Churchyard Southall
