Ernest Arthur Bryant III is an artist, critic, art teacher from the USA. He has a background in interdisciplinary art. In his work, he uses nature, video, image-making, history, positionality, theory and humor to examine the identity conflicts that arise during the encounter of different aesthetic and cultural values. He has held teaching positions in several institutions including RISD, Bard College, and Pratt Institute. From Fall 2022, he was appointed to the position of assistant professor of art at New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study.

Early Life

E. A. Bryant III was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He attended North Community High School in Minneapolis’s Northside.

Career

E. A. Bryant III began his artistic practice while a student at North High School, After graduating from North High School, he was active in the Minneapolis art scene. He participated in several artistic projects and some of his first exhibitions were in Barnes & Noble Bookstore, Minneapolis, Ordway Center of Performance Art, and Intermedia Arts and Juxtaposition Arts. He received critical attention from local publications including Insight News, the Star Tribune, The Minneapolis Liberator, and the City Pages.

E. A. Bryant III earned a BFA from The Minneapolis College of Art & Design, and also an MFA from Yale University’s School of Art. At Yale, Bryant focused on critical theory, new media, and printmaking. While at Yale, he organized Black Film Friday, a celebration and discussion of Black film makers. Ernest was earned a second MFA in Art Writing & Criticism from the School of Visual arts in New York City.

He taught a class in prison, for Yale Prison Education Initiative, served as a resident critic and teaching fellow. Over the years he has taught mural painting, and studio art to teens. He worked for a non-profit Black arts organization: Obsidian Arts, as an independent exhibition curator.

Ernest was in residency at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, did a self-designed residency in Santiago, Cuba, and was in at the Yale Norfolk School of Art, and as a guest critic, in Graphic Design, at Pratt Institute, and in Sculpture at RISD. Initiative, served as a resident critic and teaching fellow at the Yale Norfolk School of Art, and in Sculpture at RISD. E.A. Bryant has lived and worked in several countries including Greece, China, and Cuba. From Fall 2022, he was appointed to the position of associate professor at New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study
